My field of research concerns the physicochemical and mechanical properties of porous materials such as those involved in civil and environmental engineering (concrete, soils, rocks, etc.). Through their connected porosity, these materials have the distinctive feature of exchanging fluids - that may contain chemically agressive agents or may be subjected to phase transitions - with the exterior, in addition to thermal and mechanical energy forms. To better understand and predict the behaviour of such materials, I have recourse to the Biot-Coussy poromechanics that permits analyzing how phenomena acting at the pore scale yield macroscopic stress and strain by couplings.

The following projects are currently carried out :

  • Freezing in cement-based materials, by ice crystallization from in-pore aqueous solution.
  • Permeability and in-pore salt crystallization in the context of CO2 sequestration in deep saline aquifers.
  • Poro-visco-elastic behaviour and NMR study of hydrating well-cement.

The last two projects are part of an IFSTTAR Strategic and Incentivized Research Operations conducted with Jean-Michel Pereira from Geotechnics team : STOCO2 - underground sequestration of CO2.

  • Qiang Zeng (2007-2011) : poromechanical behavior of cement-based materials subjected to freeze-thaw actions with salts : modeling and experiments [co-supervisor for the Chinese PhD part defended in 2012 : Kefei Li (Tsinghua University)] ; After a postdoctoral position at Tsinghua University, Qiang is now an assistant professor at College of Civil Engineering and Architecture, Zhejiang University.
